I'm starting to understand what Paul was talking about when he said, "...live a life worthy of the calling you have received." Whoa. It's such a bold statement that I am having trouble wrapping my head around it. In God's wisdom He created us so that all we have to do is "be". We don't have to perform. We don't have to make the grade. We are perfectly, unconditionally, loved just the way we are. Yet, at the same time, when we were conceived, God created us with a calling, or a purpose, a destiny. In His infinite wisdom He says, "All you have to do is allow me to love you," and He also says, "live a life worthy of the calling you have received".
To be a mom is one of the most thankless callings and yet it is the most intrinsically rewarding jobs that I have ever done. Brandon has recently mentioned that while growing up, there were countless times when he didn't appreciate his parents or realize the sacrifices they were making for him. Now, as the table is turned, and he is a father, he's had a revelation of the humbling job a parent has. It's my calling and it's his calling to be Eva's mom and dad. To teach her. To love her. To mold her. To model for her. To inspire her. To represent Jesus to her here on Earth. Whoa.
But before I start to panic and think that there is no possible way that I can live a life that is truly worthy, I remember grace. I remember that in every situation, no matter how big or small, that His grace is sufficient for me. I take a big deep breath, and I can rest with a big wide smile, because I know that He's never going to give me a job that's too big to handle.
While Eva is nursing, I pray this song over her. The words are from Numbers 6:24-26. May I live a life worthy of the calling I've received. May I live a life that inspires Eva and inspires the world to want Jesus. May every person I see and touch feel a fire that is unquenchable and know that it is God.
