What's everybody got against birthdays?!

Me: So, what'd you do for your birthday?
Them: Nothing really, I mean as I get older it's just not really a big deal.
Me: WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Kelly has always told me that I get this birthday-delirium from growing up with split families. Split families meant 2 parties, 2 sets of gifts, 2 cakes, and 2 sleepovers. But honestly, I REALLY think that there is more to it than that. Work with me for a sec.

You're born. It's pretty much the biggest day of your life. You were once a thought, but now a human of flesh and blood. You grow. You fall. You get back up again. And because of these ups and downs, you have a story. This story is your testimony. Your personal no-one-in-the-world-has-one-like-you-story. How does this relate to birthdays? Well, I'm glad you asked. A birthday or a holiday is a specific day of the year that we set aside to remember, to focus, to celebrate something amazing that has taken place. YOU ARE AMAZING. You are WORTH remembering! I say all of these things with my birthday aside, I am not scrounging for reasons why the world should celebrate me. I am justifying why birthdays ARE a big deal and why the people in our lives should be remembered and honored and celebrated.

Oh, so you're saying it's too costly? Is that your excuse?! The lavish gifts and gourmet dinners are not what I'm talking about (although they are always a nice add-on), I'm talking about the phone call. The card that was hand made. The thought that goes into a funny decoration or song you made up when it was way too late and you had way too much on your mind. How about this, sitting around the dinner table and sharing a, "This is one thing that I admire about the BirthdayGuy", thought. These things are free and they are good and lovely and pure and oh, so special.

I'm going to be 29 on Sunday (2 more days) and I REJOICE at the thought of another year of life. Man, I want to live it to the fullest. No regrets. No looking back. No shoulda-coulda-woulda's. I want to embrace ALL that life has for me and not give anxiety, doubt, or fear a second of my time.

So, birthdays ARE a big deal. Every person has one and every person deserves to be honored on their Birth-Day. Work with me here people. Do you see what I'm seeing?!
