Picture this.
Walking to car from grocery store. Open trunk. Stroller and 2 bags with return items (it's probably the only time I would ever use the word "items") in them. No vacancy.
Walk to front of passenger side. Open door. Seat is 4 inches from touching dashboard. No vacancy.
Back seat is full. Two car seats. No vacancy.
Why did we buy an SUV if it doesn't have any more room for all of our stuff?! Ugh, this totally sounds like a quote from, First Word Problems, a hilarious Twitter Feed.
Unfortunately, when we bought the Jeep we didn't give the ol' backseat a test run with a car seat. The car seats are SO deep that the passenger seat is literally a couple inches away from the dash. It's kinda scary to think what would happen to my knees in an accident. My dancer friend, Jo, tried to hitch a ride the other day and the pool girl was almost riding side-saddle, just to keep her long legs from knockin'.
So, this rant is really a plea for help. If we are vehicle searching, which we may be and have been for quite a while, what is the best family car out there? One rule: I'm not a van-type-of-mom. I love those who are, it's just not me. Should we lease? Do we really need 4-wheel drive?
Help!

if you have good tires, you don't need four wheel drive. in my opinion. If the snow is THAT deep you probably shouldn't be driving in it anyway. I would get a new car. No break-downs, a great warranty, smells better...I think - plus if it has a third seat Solly and I can ride with you....sound good? good.
hullo.
we test drove every suv on the market.
i'm yer girl for info.
Honda Pilot.
You know I have tested nearly everything to haul a bunch of kids in right?
The honda pilot has a third row seat...no adult would ever want to sit back there but you cold always lob a kid and they are still safe with the crumple zone. Hondas are good vehicles and is my second pic to what I currently drive (but there is no physical way my tribe of 9 could go in a Pilot...unless we are in a circus side show and one of us has a flower that squirts water.)
Another good one... Toyota 4runner...built on a truck bed like my sequioa...but it is on the smaller truck frame....but still truck frame not some dink car frame. It does not have third row...so it may not do you any favors.. I do know folks who have put third rows in them...AND who have gotten 3 car seats to line the second row.
There ya have it...I can tell you why not others...but the list was loooooooooooooong about the why nots.

Instead of an SUV, have you considered a wagon like a Subaru Outback or VW Passat/Jetta wagon? I don't know how much room you are looking for, but that might be a reasonable alternative from a huge SUV or minivan. I don't have any personal experience with the wagon format, but they are fairly popular in this neck of the woods.
As for 4WD, ask yourself, "How many times have I engaged 4WD last year?"
IMO, if it is less 10, you probably don't need it. And I would tend to agree with what Kelly said, regarding tires and the depth of snow.
Need a good choice? Go for vans. They have all the spaces you need. :)
