When He went to talk with His dad, He asked them for such a simple thing.
Keep watch.
"My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."
Again, keep watch.
"My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."
Asleep, again.
Even his closest, the ones who walked with Him, couldn't keep it together. They couldn't get it right. Even the one who laid on his chest at dinner.
But that didn't stop Him. His eyes were fixed on the Father. His vision, fixed on the unseen.
"And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit."
He chose us. He chose you over himself. He chose to give you life and He swallowed death.
A lifetime of holy coincidences. The old had prophesied the new. And in those moments, time stood still. The one who created time, left the mortal man and returned again to the eternal.
It is a good, good Friday.
He is still asking us to keep watch and we still fall asleep, again.
But grace stepped in that day and keeping the rules stepped out. In fact, the rules are now written on our heart, stamped in love.
It is a good, good Friday.
Let's stay awake to the spirit all weekend and watch. Watch.
