Let the Games, err, Renovations Begin

We have finally fought the apathy of the banks and investment companies and found contracts and dates in our emails.

Praise. The. Lord.

Do you like painted brick? I'm thinking white for this brick and gray for the walls.
Do you remember when I wrote THIS post? The post about how we miraculously bought a house from a word, Psalm 16:5, that God spoke to us? That was March 23. It is May 28 and we have been suspended on a tight rope, waiting to fall or cross.

What the heck am I talking about? Well, long story short, 2 banks got together and made a baby. The baby was called, "WE'VE ACCEPTED YOUR OFFER AND YOU BOUGHT A HOUSE!".

Then, an investment company heard about this new baby and got jealous. The investment company wanted the banks to call the baby, "YOU NEED TO OFFER MORE MONEY".

Hence, we sat for 2 months with nothing. Nothing. Again, we weren't sure if we were going to fall or cross. This verse kept rising in my spirit, "Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered...".

How about that border and the peeling paint? Oh, you like the carpeted floors too?
Words can't truly explain the ups and down of this story, but I will do my best by saying that hope and joy have entered back into our hearts. There were days when I told God, out loud, "If we lose this house and I have to explain my story of losing the house to everyone I told the miracle to, it IS ok, because God, no matter what, we have you". There were days when I didn't tell God anything, because I was too sad and the waiting seemed indefinite.

I know this is nothing compared to those who are waiting on healing, those who are waiting on promises, those who are waiting for restoration, but I do know that the same God who came through for me is going to come through for you.

EVEN IF IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE WHAT YOU THOUGHT IT SHOULD.

Why have your refrigerator in the kitchen when you can have your washer and dryer?!

I would love to pray with you. It is truly my heart to see you on the other side... Cross.

Settlement on our townhouse is Monday, June 3rd. Settlement on our new house is June 18th. Move-in day is July 31st. That gives us about 6 weeks to renovate, pack, and move. Any advice? Please. No, really, I am begging for advice, tips, comments, anything!

We have moved twice in our lives, college and marriage. We have helped move many, but we know we are not experts. And moving with two kids under 4, how does that come into play? Err, work? Should I pack now? Wait to pack until closer to moving? Should I have a yard sale now or take stuff with me that I know I will probably never use? Is it hard for dogs to acclimate to a new environment? Have you ever opened an in-ground pool? Should I keep the kitchen with a U-shaped layout or open it up to an L-shape?

How long do you think we will survive with this as our powder room bathroom?! Guesses?
Yes, that hole in the ceiling is covered by a trash bag and duct tape.

If you're not into renovations or before/after photos, you may want to divert your reading for the next 2 months. Revelations from a Renovation??? Kinda catchy! Can't wait for your advice and anything that you need prayer for. I will stand with you and pray for you. That's what we do, right?!

Cheers.

Get rid of as much as you can before you move SO HELPFUL! at least in moving across country :) Blessings to you guys. I don't think You'll last more than a week with that bathroom :) I could see you taking on the project yourself :) I CANT WAIT to see the finished product. You guys are awesome and carry so much creativity and beauty!

I haven't stopped in for awhile but so glad to see the house plans are moving forward! You have a great sense of style and I think it will fun to see this house transform! I agree (if you have time) try to do a yard sale before you move. We're also doing some renovations downstairs at our house and I've been looking for fireplace makeover inspiration too! Love you guys!

Adam and I have moved 6 times in our less than 10 years of marriage. It doesn't get easier with practice. My advice is to try to have fun with it. Drink a little too much wine; blast the music a little too loud; make designs with the packing tape; invite your friends. Hire movers, maybe even have them pack. Get rid of things you don't love, as long as you can live without them until you find something you do love/can afford. I found myself replacing some things I had given away with things I was equally unsatisfied with and that was frustrating. But, I also went 4 months without a living room sofa so I could have one I loved and am currently living without a coffee table, living room chair, and lamps for the same reasons. I still think it was a great decision. After all the moves and a stuff-stealing house fire, I have realized that stuff is just stuff, but there is some stuff that means more than other stuff. For me, that was stuff (like my friend's artwork and gifts) that connected me to others, stuff that allowed me to be creative given the short notice given to those with children and commitments (cheap fabric napkins I bought on sale 3 years ago, trim remnants, paint), and stuff that made me feel good about myself (that perfect little black dress, no matter how long you have had it or how little you have worn it). Moving has a habit of being no fun, but I hope it goes well for you.

Honestly. No, I'm being serious, thank you and thank you for all of the advice, tips, ideas, etc. Joy, this move feels similar to what you said, "get rid of the things you don't love, as long as you can live without...". Too many things that I don't need to take, rather wait and save up for things I do love. I can't believe you've moved 6 times, and with that history, I'm sure there will be more to come. You're inspiring. Thanks for posting.
